Reviews of decisions made under the Livestock Act 1993
From 4 October 2018, SACAT will have review jurisdiction under the Livestock Act 1993 (SA). This will enable reviews of certain decisions made by the Chief Inspector of Stock.
Types of Decisions that can be reviewed by SACAT
SACAT can review decisions made by the Chief Inspector to:
- Determine an amount of compensation payable for particular livestock or property where the livestock or property has either died or been destroyed to control an exotic disease
- Issue a notice requiring a person to discontinue or not commence a specified activity, not carry on a specified activity except subject to specified conditions or take specified action within a specified period;
- Refuse to grant or renew registration to keep livestock, operate an artificial breeding centre or operate a veterinary diagnostic laboratory, or impose a condition on registration
- Refuse to grant or renew registration of a brand
- Suspend, cancel or impose conditions upon the registration of a brand
- Issue a compliance notice.
Generally, an application for review of a decision must be lodged within:
- 21 days of receipt of a compensation determination
- 14 days of the issue of a compliance notice
- 1 month of the date of the decision
- In special circumstances, the Tribunal may permit you to make an application after this time.
Before applying to SACAT for a review of a Livestock decision you must:
- Have a copy of the decision which you want to challenge – you should include this with your application.
- Ensure you are ready to pay the required fee for making an application.

Attach a copy of the decision you are seeking to review:
You must upload a copy of the decision you are seeking to review when completing your on-line application, or you can email the decision to SACAT at firstname.lastname@example.org, or post the decision to SACAT at GPO Box 2361 Adelaide SA 5001. Please quote your tracking code or file number when sending any correspondence to SACAT.
There is a filing fee applicable for this type of application. Payment can be made on-line by credit card at the time of completing the on-line form, or by using one of the other options outlined in the payment section of the on-line form.
